(Previously SCRAM)
Novato community members have the opportunity to join our crime fighting by registering for our Camera Registry program.
In continuing to promote the City of Novato’s vision of proactive, problem-solving partnerships with the community, Novato Police has a program which allows residents and business owners to voluntarily register the locations of their video surveillance systems with the department.
This crime prevention and investigative tool allows law enforcement to easily identify the locations of video surveillance systems and enlist the assistance of the community to help obtain video evidence. The registry is kept confidential.
Novato Police does not have direct access to footage but is aware that a camera exists when investigating a crime in or around a particular neighborhood. If a crime occurs in the vicinity or an adjoining neighborhood, the police may, if necessary, contact participants of the program and request a copy of their footage for evidence or investigative leads.
Previously, members of the police department were often charged with going door to door to ask residents and business owners if security cameras were present. This new tool will allow for increased thoroughness and efficiency when confronting criminal activity in the City of Novato. By capitalizing on technology and proactively engaging the community in crime prevention efforts, the City of Novato can continue to thrive as a City that Works.
