City Council Appoints Adam McGill as New City Manager
The City of Novato is pleased to announce that the City Council has unanimously appointed current Acting City Manager Adam McGill as the new City Manager effective immediately. McGill has been serving as Acting City Manager since August.
“Adam is a proven leader and an effective communicator who will excel as our next City Manager,” stated Mayor Eric Lucan. “Over the past 3 years as Novato’s Chief of Police, Adam managed the largest City department and quickly earned the respect of our staff, council and the greater Novato community. Given his character, work ethic, and commitment to Novato, I have no doubt that he is the strongest individual for the role.” Mayor Lucan added “Fortunately, we only had to look across the street for our next City Manager instead of a lengthy and costly national search.” For the last three years McGill has served as Novato’s Chief of Police and will be stepping away from that role to take on this new position. The City will be appointing a new Police Chief later this month.
“We are thrilled to have the expertise of Adam McGill,” said Mayor Pro Tem Denise Athas. “His leadership skills as Chief of Police will be an incredible foundation for our City. He has everything we need to move us forward. I, personally, look forward to working with him, staff and council to make our City the best it can be.”
McGill has 28 years of public service experience with extensive knowledge in leadership development, community relations and transparency, budget management, emergency preparedness, employee recruitment and retention, and building organizational morale. As Novato’s Police Chief, he improved morale, increased employee retention, and helped foster camaraderie in the department, earning McGill accolades from the community, members of the department, and associated labor groups.
“I am looking forward to working with Adam as our City Manager,” said Councilmember Pat Eklund. “He shares my interest in increasing transparency, fiscal sustainability and commitment to our quality of life.”
“I am very optimistic that, as I leave office, I leave the City in good hands with Adam McGill as our new City Manager,” said Councilmember Pam Drew.
Adam possesses a Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice Administration and a Master’s degree in Emergency Services Administration.
“I feel fortunate for the opportunity to represent this community and am grateful to the Council for the confidence they have placed in me,” said McGill. “I am committed to collaboration and inclusiveness and excited to help strengthen organizational and community confidence in all of our City operations. I will especially miss leading the day to day operations of the Police Department and serving alongside some of the best policing professionals I’ve ever been associated with.”
Adam and his wife Jennifer reside in Novato and are looking forward to expanding their family with the birth of their baby girl in early 2020. He will receive an annual base salary of $248,000.
The City of Novato was incorporated in 1960 and has a population of 55,655 residents. The City’s operating and capital budgets for fiscal year 2019/2020 total $81.8 million.
