City Manager Takes Action to Address Concerns Over Consultants
Recently, it has come to light that certain consultants for the City were involved in issues which are inconsistent with City of Novato values and I have decided to terminate the contracts of two individuals. Though we were aware of some of the past allegations at the time of hiring, the background checks we performed resulted in details inconsistent with the information provided in recent press articles.
After the recent allegations came to our attention, I launched an investigation into the full team of financial consultants, and uncovered a second individual whose background could also be a distraction from the important work that the City is trying to accomplish.
Our organization, like other local government agencies, relies on consultant firms to provide us with individuals who are qualified and sufficiently experienced to perform the needed services, with the integrity our community deserves. We are dismayed that the firms we relied upon have failed to provide us with consultants meeting those qualifications.
It is important for the community to understand that during their time with the City, these individuals provided consultation services to City employees and had limited authority or access to City financial systems and no access to municipal bank accounts.
Going forward, all consultants in key positions will be fully vetted, akin to the background checks performed on regular employees. Our organization is staffed with incredibly talented and hardworking employees with the highest integrity and the prior activities of consultants should not reflect upon them.
